Restorative Cities Initiative
Our aspiration: a restorative response hub in every neighborhood.
When harm happens, most people have two options — call the police or let it go. We are building a third.
A restorative response hub is a place in the neighborhood where harm can be brought, and where trained neighbors help those involved name what happened, take responsibility, and repair what was broken. Not outside professionals. Neighbors.
Twenty-seven hubs are open today, each rooted in an institution the neighborhood already trusts and staffed by residents we recruit, train, and support. We are working toward a movement in which every neighborhood has one.
Our aim is saturation: a hub within one square mile — walking distance — of every neighbor. When justice is that close, it stops being something that happens to a community and becomes something the community does.
RCI promotes peace by offering popular education in restorative practices that support transformative and restorative justice, fostering equity, fairness, accountability, repair, and healing through dialogue.
How?
- We build social capital by raising awareness of restorative justice (RJ) as an alternative to traditional retributive justice systems in all arenas.
- We address interpersonal and systemic wrongdoing in health care, education, law enforcement, judicial systems, congregations, and other institutions of public concern.
